The Editor's Desk: February Musings

February always feels like a quiet pivot point. The new year energy has softened, routines are settling, and there’s more room to notice what’s actually working (what's not) and what’s quietly inspiring me lately. This month is equal parts cozy, creative, and quietly indulgent.

On My Mind + On My Desk

  • 90s Minimal Nostalgia: Clean lines. Long black coats. Slip silhouettes. Interiors that feel pared back but intentional with dark woods, chrome, and negative space. The return of ’90s restraint feels grounding amid trends of excess.

  • The Minimal European Aesthetic: The kind done so effortlessly by Zara Home, it's characterized by tonal palettes, sculptural ceramics, low lighting, and natural linen. They're spaces that whisper instead of shout, and that's always going to feel right to me.

  • Swans in Art, Everywhere: Whether in imperfect paintings, vintage sketches, or textile prints. Swans, to me, have always felt both graceful and strong. Romantic without being saccharine. They feel symbolic of this softer, more refined creative shift I'm in.

  • Hand-Drawn Margins: Doodles creeping into planners and journals. My favorite being imperfect florals, martini glasses, or detailed tablescapes. A quiet rebellion against hyper-perfection. Proof that personality will always win over polish.

  • The Leather Journal Renaissance: The personalized leather Louise Carmen-style journal, adorned with charms and layered inserts, has completely crossed over from stationery circles into mainstream lifestyle and fashion accounts. It’s no longer niche, it’s the "It" accessory. With the return of small meaningful charms clipped, layered, and collected, it seems like personal storytelling is in the tiny details. The Power of the Planner Community is strong! What started as organization has evolved into identity, artistry, and influence. The planner world quietly shapes aesthetic trends and the ripple effect into fashion and lifestyle spaces is undeniable.

  • Hosting, Softly: Inviting family and friends over in a relaxed, unhurried way with, of course, low lighting, records spinning quietly, simple snacks laid out, a game half-played at the table. Conversation is absolutely flowing, but it's less performance, and more presence. Cozy, intimate, and intentionally analog.

Media I Consumed

  • Love Story (Hulu): A deep dive into the romance and timelessness of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and John F. Kennedy Jr., it's equal parts nostalgia, fashion archive, and cultural time capsule. It feels very aligned with this month’s return to ’90s minimalism and restrained glamour.

  • Plur1bus (Apple TV+): Plur1bus has been one of those quietly compelling watches I'm not hearing enough people talk about. It's intelligent and slightly unsettling in the best way. The kind of show that lingers and I hate that I have to wait for season 2. It constantly had me asking, what would I do in that situation?

  • The Olympics (especially hockey): There’s something about the global collective focus of the Olympic Games that always pulls me in. I swear I cry at every opening ceremonies I watch. As a good ol' Canadian girl, I tuned in to as much of the hockey as I could. Still so proud of that silver medal 🥈

  • Re-Reading an Old Favorite: I revisited a romantic fantasy I once really liked (The Bonds That Tie series) and it turns out some books are better left in the version of ourselves that first loved them. Not everything needs to be returned to. Some stories don’t hold up, and that realization feels both somewhat disappointing but oddly clarifying.

Little Luxuries I’m Loving

  • Candlelit Environments, Whenever Possible: DO NOT turn on the big light! Ever! Let the room glow instead. Even ordinary evenings feel elevated when they’re lit intentionally. Little lamps everywhere, candles burning on the table, warm light affects my mood so much.

  • Depth Over Novelty: Longer reads. Slower shows. Essays (or substack articles) instead of reels. I’m noticing a collective craving for substance and a return to meaningful rituals over micro-trends.

  • Valentine’s, Reimagined: It's less about reservations and grand gestures, more about atmosphere and connection. Writing love notes to yourself. Setting the table beautifully, even if it’s just for one. Making the day feel intentional rather than performative.

  • Personal Touches at Home: Layering mixed metal picture frames with photos of your favorites, frames filled with personal art. Surrounding myself with reminders of memory and meaning instead of perfectly styled anonymity. I'm even debating decorating my fridge, which would shock some people.

  • Designed Evenings In: Setting the tone is my mantra lately. Music playing softly. A simple dessert. Letting the night feel curated (even if it's a Tuesday) without feeling forced.

Closing Thoughts

February feels less like a headline and more like fine print, easy to overlook if you’re moving too quickly. It is the shortest month after all. It doesn’t ask for reinvention, just refinement. It’s the month of low light, deeper tones, nostalgic love stories, and evenings that feel curated rather than consumed. I’m noticing a collective shift toward intimacy — in our homes, in what we watch, in how we celebrate, in what we choose to return to (and what we don’t).

If January was all about momentum, February is about discernment.

Depth over novelty, atmosphere over excess, and creating a life that feels beautifully lived even on the quietest days.

Until March,

— Emilee
